You’re In Space And Everyone Wants You Dead (GBJAM 5)
This time we take a look at one of the least Gameboy like games in the GBJAM – this 3D claustrophobic kill or be killed entry from Adamgryu. While it may not quite have that “Gameboy feel” You’re in Space and Everyone Wants You Dead is an interesting little game in its own right.
YiSaEWYD only barely meets the jam’s criteria of having the original Gameboy resolution and 4 colours, and its “Gameboy feel” rank has the low score to prove it. But that’s also its strong point; there’s only so many platformers and action-adventure games you can play before you start to empathize with that guy in Groundhog Day. So what you get here are 3D planets to run around on, grabbing bombs and blocks and throwing them at the anthropomorphic bowling balls. The title is a good indication as any of your plight.
You run around planets about half the size of those in Mario Galaxy (I’m not sure actually, but the planets are small). When a planet looks close enough you can try a double jump to Buzz Aldrin across to the other. But that’s a bad comparison, because things move pretty fast in YiSaEWYD, like your shift key hasn’t popped back up from your game of Doom from a few minutes prior. It’s not perfect – some of the jumping is a little hit and miss – but it’s a novel approach to the GBJam.
